STEVEN CURRAN

Steven - the man himself

Who’d have thought that a passion for the outdoors and avid childhood hoarding of attractive rocks and minerals would have created a path to my current position. It was however the above that led me to study geology at the University of Glasgow. The course, mandatory fieldtrips and six weeks of geological mapping on Skye only served to sharpen my enthusiasm for the subject (honest).

After graduation (Class of ’95) it was very gratifying to land that first job, especially as it actually bore relevance to my degree. I duly embarked on a career in Engineering Geology, starting as a Graduate Geologist with Thorburn Colquhoun (latterly URS Corporation), advancing to Project Geologist, attaining CGeol status and most recently becoming a geotechnical specialist for, and Director of, Terrenus.

The words that best describe my approach to projects would be methodical, trustworthy, pragmatic and responsible. I set high standards and attach particular significance to clear and concise communication. A simple statement which often runs through my head and probably provides an insight to my work style would be ‘if it looks and feels right it probably is …… but check it again anyway’.

Days out and about with the family take up much of my spare time. I manage to squeeze in the odd round of golf (and believe me, odd doesn't begin to cover the quality of shots usually on display) and enjoy online gaming (PS3) of an evening. I have a 4yr old boy and a 2yr old girl, both of whom are blessed with the ability to remind their Dad not to take life too seriously.
